HRV and the Nervous System: What Your Wearable Is Actually Measuring
If you wear a ring, watch or strap that tracks your health, you've probably seen the term HRV, heart rate variability, appear on a dashboard somewhere, along with a score that goes up some days and down on others.
Most people know instinctively that a higher number is meant to be good and a lower one isn't, without necessarily knowing what the number is actually tracking, or what to do with the information once they have it.
What HRV actually measures
Heart rate variability is not your heart rate. It's the variation in time between each heartbeat. A heart beating at a steady 60 beats per minute sounds perfectly regular, but the actual gaps between beats are constantly shifting by small fractions of a second, speeding up slightly, slowing down slightly, in response to breath, movement and the state of your nervous system. HRV is a measure of how much that gap varies.
Counter-intuitively, more variation is generally the healthier sign. It suggests a nervous system that is responsive, able to shift between states of activation and recovery as circumstances change. Less variation, a heart beating at a more rigid, metronomic pace, tends to reflect a nervous system that has become less flexible, often because it has spent a long time under sustained load.
Vagal tone and the number behind the number
HRV is closely tied to what's often called vagal tone, the responsiveness of the vagus nerve, the primary pathway of your body's rest and recovery system. In short, the vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate, and a nervous system with strong vagal tone can apply the brakes efficiently, slowing the heart between beats and creating that beat-to-beat variability. HRV is, in effect, one of the more accessible windows we have into how well that braking system is working day to day.
Why HRV moves around so much
People often find their HRV fluctuates more than they expect, and can find this unsettling, more so once they start tracking it closely. Sleep, alcohol, illness, training load, emotional stress and even the weight of a difficult conversation can all move the number. This is expected. HRV is sensitive to your total load at any given moment, not just physical fitness, which is part of why it's become popular as a broader read on recovery and stress rather than just a fitness metric.
It's worth holding the number loosely. A single low reading rarely means much on its own. What's more informative is the trend over weeks, and whether your baseline is gradually improving, staying flat, or declining, particularly alongside how you're actually feeling.
Nervous system regulation and HRV
Because HRV reflects the responsiveness of the autonomic nervous system, patterns of chronic tension and prolonged activation, the kind we discuss often in relation to [nervous system regulation], tend to show up here too. A system that has been running in a sustained, low-grade state of alert, even without an obvious cause, often shows less variability, less flexibility, than one that moves more easily between effort and recovery.
