Disc Problems

A disc diagnosis, bulge, herniation, prolapse, degeneration, can feel alarming. It's worth understanding what it actually means, what it doesn't mean, and what approaches are available beyond the options typically offered.

What disc problems actually mean

The intervertebral discs sit between each vertebra of the spine, acting as shock absorbers and allowing movement. When a disc bulges or herniates, most commonly in the lower lumbar or lower cervical spine, part of the disc material pushes outward and can place pressure on the nearby nerve roots. The result can be local pain, radiating pain into the limbs, tingling, or numbness.

It's worth knowing that disc changes are common and often asymptomatic, many people have disc bulges or herniations visible on imaging without any pain at all. What determines whether a disc change causes symptoms is often not the structural change itself, but the context around it: the degree of spinal loading, the state of the surrounding musculature and nervous system, and the overall capacity of the system to adapt.

This is important because it means that the structural picture on an X-ray or MRI is not the whole story, and addressing only the structure often misses what's maintaining the pain.

Gentle Disc treatment Chiropractic Sydney

How we approach this

Dr Euan will always review any imaging you have before any hands-on work begins, and the approach is adapted carefully to the nature and severity of your presentation. Network Spinal uses no twisting, no rotation, and no force, making it appropriate for many people with disc involvement who would not be suited to traditional manipulation. The gentle contacts work with the nervous system and surrounding spinal structures rather than targeting the disc directly.

Gentle manual chiropractic adjusting is also available in some cases, applied with care and always with your full understanding. Dr Euan will give you a clear picture of what he thinks would help and what he'd suggest avoiding, and will always refer on if he feels another form of assessment or treatment is more appropriate for your situation.

What people notice

People with disc-related pain who come to WellWellWell Sydney often find that the gentle approach helps reduce the muscular guarding and nervous system sensitisation that maintains the pain cycle around a disc injury, even when the structural disc change itself remains. Many describe gradual improvement in their ability to move, sit, and sleep as the surrounding tissue responds to care.

Chiropractic care does not repair disc herniations or structural changes. If you are experiencing significant neurological symptoms, severe weakness, progressive numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control, please seek urgent medical attention.
