Postnatal & Maternity Chiropractic Care: Recovering After Birth
What does postnatal chiropractic care involve? Gentle, non-force support for the pelvis, spine, and nervous system as your body recovers from birth and adjusts to the physical demands of early parenting. Care can begin as soon as you feel ready.
What changes after birth
Birth is one of the more significant physical events a body goes through, and recovery doesn't stop the moment your baby arrives. The pelvis and spine are still settling from nine months of change, and the early weeks bring new physical demands of their own, feeding, carrying, broken sleep, and a nervous system adjusting to a major life change all at once.
Common reasons women return for postnatal care
Many women return for postnatal support to help the pelvis and spine settle after birth, to address the postural strain of feeding and carrying a newborn, or simply because disrupted sleep and a demanding new routine have left them feeling more tense and less regulated than usual. Some return because they'd been receiving care through pregnancy and want to continue that support afterward.
What a postnatal session looks like
Sessions continue the same gentle, non-force approach used throughout pregnancy, adapted to where you're at in recovery. There is no cracking, twisting, or forceful adjustment at any point. Many women describe postnatal sessions as one of the few times in a demanding new routine where they get to simply lie still and let their body settle.
When to start
Whenever you feel ready. Some women return within the first few weeks after birth, others wait longer, and both are common. If you were receiving care during pregnancy, we cover the full trimester picture in Chiropractic Care by Trimester: What to Expect, or you can read more generally on our Pregnancy Chiropractic page.
Common questions
How soon after birth can I come in?
Whenever you feel comfortable. Some women come in within the first few weeks for pelvic, spinal, or nervous system support during the postpartum phase.
Do I need to have received care during pregnancy to come in postnatally?
No. Many women come in for postnatal care without having had any prenatal sessions.
Is postnatal care different if I had a caesarean?
Care is always adapted to you, including how you gave birth and where you're at in recovery.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. You're welcome to book directly.
