Chiropractic Care for Babies and Newborns

What does chiropractic care for babies involve? Extremely gentle, non-force contacts, generally no firmer than you'd use to test the ripeness of a piece of fruit, adapted to a newborn's size and stage. Most sessions happen with your baby settled in your arms.

Why parents bring newborns in

Birth is a significant physical event for a baby, regardless of how it unfolds. Parents bring newborns in for many reasons, from a preference for turning the head one way, to unsettled sleep, to simply wanting proactive support for their baby's nervous system in the earliest weeks of life. There doesn't need to be a specific concern for a visit to be worthwhile.

What birth can ask of a newborn's body

However a baby arrives, whether by a straightforward vaginal birth, an assisted delivery, or a caesarean, the process places real demands on a small body that has spent nine months in a very different position. It's common for newborns to carry some tension or asymmetry in the days and weeks afterward as they adjust to life outside the womb.

Common things parents notice

Some of the more common things parents mention include a head that always turns or tilts the same way, stiffness or discomfort when being dressed or having a nappy changed, difficulty settling, or feeding on one side more easily than the other. None of these are unusual, and many resolve as a baby grows, but they're worth mentioning at a visit.

What a session looks like for a baby

Sessions for babies are brief, unhurried, and almost always take place with your baby held in your arms rather than on a table. Contacts are extremely light, and the pace follows your baby entirely, with plenty of pausing if they're unsettled. Many babies settle or fall asleep during a session.

When to consider bringing your baby in

There's no single sign that means it's time. We've written more broadly about this in When Should You Take Your Child to a Chiropractor?, which covers babies through to teenagers. You can also read more on our Kids Chiropractic page.

Common questions

Is chiropractic care for newborns different from care for older children?
Yes. Contacts for babies are lighter still than for older children, sessions are shorter, and almost all care happens with your baby in your arms.

How soon after birth can I bring my baby in?
Many parents bring babies in within the first few weeks of life. There's no need to wait for a specific concern to arise.

What if my baby was born by caesarean?
That's completely fine. Babies born by caesarean are just as welcome, and the approach is adapted to your baby regardless of how they arrived.

Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. You're welcome to book directly.
