Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, and it happens fast. Your posture, balance and breathing all shift from one month to the next, and many women find their usual ways of managing stress and tension stop working as well. If you are considering seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy in Sydney, it helps to know what to look for, and what to ask, before you book.
Start with your pregnancy care team
Your midwife, GP or obstetrician is the first port of call for anything that worries you during pregnancy. Chiropractic care, if you choose it, sits alongside their care rather than replacing it. A good pregnancy chiropractor will ask about your pregnancy, any complications, and who is looking after you, and will be comfortable communicating with your care team if that is helpful.
If you have bleeding, severe or sudden pain, fluid loss, reduced baby movements or any symptom that feels wrong, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away.
What to look for
Experience with pregnancy. Ask how often they see pregnant clients and how their approach changes through each trimester.
A gentle approach. Some women prefer low-force care during pregnancy. Ask what techniques are used and whether you can stay fully clothed.
Comfortable positioning. As your bump grows, lying face down becomes difficult. Ask how sessions are adapted, for example with supportive cushions or side-lying positions.
Clear communication. You should understand what is being done and why, and feel free to say no to anything you are not comfortable with.
Questions worth asking before you book
How long is the first visit, and what does it include? What does a typical follow-up look like? How do you adapt care in the third trimester? What would make you suggest I check in with my midwife or doctor? What are the fees, and can I claim on my health fund?
A practitioner who answers these openly is usually a good sign.
What a first visit involves at WellWellWell
Your first visit takes approximately 60 minutes. It starts with a conversation about your health, your pregnancy so far and how your body has been feeling, followed by a spinal and nervous system assessment and your first session. Network Spinal care uses light, precise contacts along the spine, and you stay fully clothed. Dr Euan will talk you through how sessions are positioned so you are comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.
Follow-up visits are shorter, typically 10 to 15 minutes.
After the birth
The months after birth bring their own demands: feeding, lifting, broken sleep and a nervous system that rarely gets to switch off. Some women continue care after the birth. You can read more in our article on postnatal and maternity chiropractic care.
